Public Health Responsibility Deal

To pursue our commitment to help young people lead physically active, healthy lifestyles, we’ve become a partner in the Department of Health’s (England) Public Health Responsibility Deal.

Launched on 15th March 2011, the Responsibility Deal brings together businesses and organisations to share experience and agree practical actions to encourage the British public to make healthier choices across four key areas: food, physical activity, alcohol and health in the workplace.

Five core commitments define the scope, purpose and high-level ambitions of the Responsibility Deal:

  1. We recognise that we have a vital role to play in improving people’s health.
  2. We will encourage and enable people to adopt a healthier diet.
  3. We will foster a culture of responsible drinking, which will help people to drink within guidelines.
  4. We will encourage and assist people to become more physically active.
  5. We will actively support our workforce to lead healthier lives.

The Responsibility Deal consists of five networks: food, physical activity, alcohol, health at work and behaviour change. SHOKK have signed up to deliver the core commitments, and the following collective pledges around the Physical Activity Network:

  1. We will use our local presence to get more children and adults more active, more often including engaging communities in planning and delivery.

  2. We will contribute to the communication and promotion of the Chief Medical Officers’ revised physical activity guidelines.

See the physical activity guidelines for young people aged 5 to 18 years here.

Annual reporting

Evaluation has an important role to play in showing the impact of the Responsibility Deal in changing behaviour and/or improving health outcomes. SHOKK will publish annual progress reports on the pledges we have committed to through the SHOKK and Department of Health websites.
