SHOKK's evidence-based approach to physical activity promotion
SHOKK's physical activity offering is tailored to meet the different needs and expectations of young people as they grow up. This lifestage rather than generic offering ensures that the activity opportunities we provide are developmentally appropriate from a physiological and behavioural perspective.
Our lifestage activity offering is guided by key market drivers and research evidence. This includes the NICE guidelines for promoting physical activity for young people, the UK-wide physical activity guidelines, the Department of Health’s (England) Public Health Responsibility Deal, and, best practice guidelines for cardiovascular and resistance exercise.
These drivers are underpinned by an evidence-base that shows there is a dose-response relationship between physical activity and health outcomes in young people. This means that the more physical activity young people (and adults) participate in, the greater the health benefits. Reducing the time we spend sitting is also important for health.
To help young people become and stay active we therefore provide fun, social and inclusive activity opportunities in our facilities. We also encourage young people to move more and sit less away from SHOKK. This is achieved through activities of daily living, recreational physical activity, exercise and sport.
Fundamental to this holistic view to physical activity promotion, we know family and friends play a key role in helping young people to be more active. We therefore consult and actively involve young people and families in developing our offering. This ensures we provide products and services that meet customer expectations and requirements.
